CROCHET: Granny's Attic


You never know what treasures you'll find in Grandma's attic -- it's always a fun place to play on a chilly autumn afternoon! Imagine the sun casting its shadows through the attic windows while you stitch.
 
Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Size: 43 x 57 inches

Materials:

Medium (worsted) weight yarn:
12 1/2 oz/625 yds/354g black
28 oz/1,400 yds/794g various light-color (A) and darker-color (B) scraps;
Size I/9/5.5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge;
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4 dc = 1 inch; 2 dc rnds = 1 inch

Pattern Note:
Change color in last stitch made.
Work over old color in round 1 only.
Drop old color to wrong side in rounds 2-5.
Do not fasten off old color until needed for next color change.

Make 48.

Rnd 1 (RS): With A, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ring, changing colors (see Stitch Guide and Pattern Notes) to B, with B, ch 2, working over A, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ring, changing to A, with A, ch 2, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off A. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Note: Rem B yarn end will be used to start next rnd and will give a neater appearance to corner.
Rnd 2: With B, insert hook through ch-2 sp and pull up lp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch sp, change to A, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch sp, dc in each of next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, change to B, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off B. (14 dc and 2 ch-2 sps with color A, 12 dc, 2 ch-1 sps and 2 ch-2 sps with B)
Rnd 3: Pull up lp of A through ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same ch-2 sp, change to B, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, change to A, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 7 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 7 sts, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off A. (22 dc and 2 ch-2 sps with A, 18 dc, 4 ch-1 sps and 2 ch-2 sps with B)
Rnd 4: Pull up lp of B through ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, change to A, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc in each of next 11 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 11 sts, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, change to B, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, [sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, [sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off B. (30 dc and 2 ch-2 sps with A, 24 dc, 6 ch-1 sps and 2 ch-2 sps with B)
Rnd 5: Pull up lp of A through ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same ch sp, change to B, ch 2, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, [sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, [sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 3 times, sk next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, change to A, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch sp, dc in each of next 15 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 15 sts, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off A and B. (38 dc and 2 ch-2 sps with A, 30 dc, 8 ch-1 sps and 2 ch-2 sps with color B)
Rnd 6: Join black with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, *[3 dc in next st, ch 1, sk next 3 sts] across to next corner**, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next 3 sts, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (72 dc, 20 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps)

Assembly
With black, working through back lps (see Stitch Guide) only and keeping A and B in same location for each Square, sew Squares tog in 6 rows of 8 Squares each.

Border
Rnd 1: Join black with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ^*[ch 1, 3 dc in center dc of next 3-dc group] across to ch-2 sp before joining of Squares, dc dec (see Stitch Guide) in ch-2 sp before seam and in next ch-2 sp after seam, 3 dc in center dc of next 3-dc group, rep from * to corner ch-2 sp, ch 1**, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, rep from ^ around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.
Rnd 2: Sl st into center dc of corner 3-dc group, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center dc of each 3-dc group across edge to next corner 3-dc group**, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in center dc of corner 3-dc group, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

This cover remembers me my grand-mother. She liked to crochet this kind of thing. It was very "à la mode" (fashion) in the seventies...
